Early Background and EXO Membership
Born in Qingdao, Shandong, in 1993, Huang Zitao engaged in Wushu training during his youth, eventually becoming a student athlete. His entry into the entertainment industry began in late 2010 when he was scouted by a representative from SM Entertainment at a talent show. He was formally introduced as a member of the boy band EXO on December 27, 2011, performing under the stage name Tao. During his tenure, he was part of the group and its sub-unit, EXO-M.

In June 2015, Huang established his own agency, Z.TAO Studio, and subsequently filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate his contract, citing unfair terms. Although the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal in 2018 and held the contract valid until 2022, Chinese courts ruled in his favor regarding his right to use his name and image for solo activities within China. This period solidified his independent career path, characterized by successful digital EP releases and large-scale concert tours.
Musical Evolution and C-Pop Ambitions
Huang incorporates elements of hip-hop, EDM, and traditional Chinese instruments into his compositions. He identifies as a songwriter and producer, drawing inspiration from Jay Chou. His 2016 album The Road, recorded partly in Los Angeles, achieved notable sales success with a limited edition release. Beyond his music, he has served as a head producer and MC on the Chinese version of Produce 101 and as a participant in Street Dance of China, aiming to bring global recognition to C-Pop.

His acting career began with the 2015 romantic film You Are My Sunshine. He later appeared in Railroad Tigers, directed by Ding Sheng, and The Game Changer.
