Honorio Delgado introduced malaria therapy for the treatment of general paresis to Latin America and established the first regional psychiatric journal. His medical practice evolved from early psychoanalytic principles toward phenomenology, defining a long career that bridged clinical treatment with the development of formal psychiatric nomenclature used in diagnostic manuals worldwide.
Clinical Innovations
Delgado influenced psychiatric treatment through direct application of biological methods. In 1917, he employed sodium nucleate to manage psychotic agitation, followed by the use of phenobarbital for seizure control in 1919. He was also among the first to utilize chlorpromazine for treating schizophrenia. His influence extended to international collaboration in 1957, when he helped establish the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum in Zurich.

As the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the National University of San Marcos for three decades, Delgado founded the Peruvian School of Psychiatry. He mentored a network of academics who disseminated his methodology across the continent. His body of work included 450 articles and 24 books covering subjects from existentialism to scientific culture. In 1918, he launched the Revista de Psiquiatría y Disciplinas Conexas, the inaugural psychiatric publication in Latin America.
Psychopathology and Nomenclature
Delgado developed criteria for understanding schizophrenia, identifying the disjunction between a patient’s internal and external reality, termed autism, alongside the breakdown of cognitive categories. He introduced the concept of atelesis to describe the failure of intentional thought. His work on diagnostic standards argued for criteria free from ideological bias, pushing for a multifactorial model that recognized both biological foundations and hierarchical descriptive assessment.
