Hermann Wilhelm Albert Blankenstein

German architect (1829–1910)

Hermann Wilhelm Albert Blankenstein is remembered for work that changed how the next generation built.

The record lists Hermann Wilhelm Albert Blankenstein as German architect (1829–1910).

Hermann Wilhelm Albert Blankenstein was born at Finowfurt in 1829. His recorded nationality is German Empire. He trained at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium and Bauakademie.

Industrialisation gave architecture iron, glass and the lift, and with them the problems of the railway station, the factory and the tall city block.

He is recorded as architect, university teacher and foreman.

Among his best-known works are Vineta-Grundschule, Markthalle VI (Berlin) and Markthalle X (Berlin), Moabiter Markthalle. Of all the arts, architecture is the one whose failures are hardest to remove.

Recognition followed: master builder, construction officer and Stadtältester von Berlin.

That the work was built in German Empire shaped it: climate, materials, planning law and who holds the budget all decide what can actually be built.

Hermann Wilhelm Albert Blankenstein died in 1910, aged 81. The buildings remain, still in use by people who never knew the name - which is the particular afterlife architecture offers.
