He served as the Minister of Budget from 1993 to 1999, a period during which he worked alongside finance minister Philippe Maystadt to address national debt. Following this, he was a member of the Chamber of Representatives from 1995 until 2009. His leadership roles included serving as President of the Chamber of Representatives in 2007 and, subsequently, as Prime Minister of Belgium from 2008 to 2009.
European Leadership
In 2009, Van Rompuy was selected to serve as the inaugural permanent President of the European Council. His mandate involved coordinating the heads of state and government of EU member nations. During his tenure, he shifted his perspective on regional expansion, moving from early skepticism regarding Turkish accession toward advocating for a close partnership between the European Union and the Turkish Republic. He concluded his service in 2014.
