Heman Bekele: The Bar of Soap Against Cancer
He got a chemistry set before his seventh birthday and started mixing household chemicals to see what would happen. By eleven he had decided what he wanted to happen: a treatment for skin cancer that a person in Ethiopia could afford. In 2023 he won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge with a prototype bar of soap. In 2024 *TIME* named him Kid of the Year. The soap has still never been tested in a human being.
Addis Ababa to Annandale
Bekele was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and emigrated to the United States at the age of four. He grew up in Annandale, Virginia, the son of Muluemebet, a teacher, and Wondwossen, a human resources specialist at the U.S. Agency for International Development, with two sisters. He attended Wakefield Forest Elementary School and Robert Frost Middle School in Fairfax County, then Carter G. Woodson High School.
The Ethiopian years did not leave him, and they are the origin of the science. He has traced his interest to early exposure to harsh sun in Ethiopia, and to the healthcare challenges facing people there. That is a specific and unusual starting point for an American middle schooler. Most children who discover chemistry sets discover explosions. Bekele arrived at a health economics problem: skin cancer treatment exists, and the people most exposed to the sun are the least able to reach it.
The Chemistry Set
The experimentation with household chemicals came first, before the goal did. At eleven he began the cancer research that would define his adolescence, framing it around the Ethiopian healthcare gap rather than around a science-fair category.
What he built is called Skin Cancer Treating Soap, or SCTS. It combines imiquimod, an established topical treatment for certain skin cancers, with lipid-based nanoparticles designed to carry the compound where a rinse-off product otherwise could not. The delivery vehicle is the invention: not a new drug, but a new way of putting an old drug onto skin in a form that people already buy, already use daily, and already know how to store. The target price is under ten dollars a unit.
That reframing is the intellectually interesting move. Bekele did not attempt to out-chemist pharmaceutical research. He attacked the distribution layer, which in global health is very often where the deaths actually accumulate.
The Machinery of Recognition
In 2023 he was selected from ten finalists to win the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, taking the title of America's Top Young Scientist. The competition pairs each finalist with a corporate mentor; Bekele worked with Deborah Isabelle, a product engineering specialist at 3M. He also collaborated with Vito Rebecca, a molecular biologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, which moved the project from a bright idea into contact with people who study melanoma for a living.
The recognition compounded. He presented his research to more than eight thousand attendees at the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists in Boston. In 2024 he received the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, which came with a ten-thousand-dollar grant, and was named *TIME* Kid of the Year. His stated long-term goal is FDA approval by 2028, followed by distribution through a nonprofit structure to reach the populations he designed the product for.
The Honest Caveats
The critical case against the hype is not obscure, and it has been made plainly. Bekele has not published in a peer-reviewed journal, which makes independent assessment of his results difficult. The active ingredient, imiquimod, is already well established in topical creams; the novelty lies in the soap format and the nanoparticle incorporation rather than in the pharmacology. And there is at present no concrete evidence of effectiveness in humans.
None of this is a scandal. It is the ordinary condition of a prototype. But it is the difference between an invention and a treatment, and the gap between those two words is measured in years of clinical trials, regulatory review and money. A 2028 FDA approval target is ambitious for a project at this stage.
Why Heman Is Called a Genius
The word follows Bekele for a reason that is more about framing than about firepower. The recognisable quality here is problem selection: the ability, at eleven, to look at a disease with existing treatments and identify that the binding constraint is not efficacy but access, then design around that constraint rather than around the chemistry. Plenty of gifted teenagers can execute a protocol. Choosing the right problem is the part that most working scientists find hardest, and Bekele chose one that connects a personal memory of Ethiopian sun to a global distribution failure.
The competition organisers made the claim official when 3M named him America's Top Young Scientist in 2023, and *TIME* extended it in 2024 by making him Kid of the Year. Those are institutional endorsements of promise, not verdicts on a discovery.
The counter-case must be stated without hedging. Nothing Bekele has produced has been validated by peer review or tested in a person. The drug at the centre of the soap is not his. Much of what is remarkable about the story is the mentorship structure that surrounded it — a 3M engineer, a Johns Hopkins molecular biologist, a national platform — which is exactly the sort of scaffolding that distinguishes a well-supported prodigy from an isolated one. The honest summary is that Bekele has demonstrated exceptional scientific taste and unusual persistence for his age. Whether he has demonstrated genius depends entirely on results that do not yet exist.
Legacy
Bekele's contribution so far is an idea with a clear shape: that the last mile of cancer treatment might be solved with a bar of soap costing less than ten dollars. Even if SCTS never reaches approval, the reframing is durable and transferable to other diseases and other geographies. He set 2028 as his deadline. He will be barely out of his teens when it arrives, which is either the most encouraging fact in the story or the most sobering one, depending on how much weight a person is willing to place on a prototype.
