Born on 9 March 1838 in Friedrichshafen, Heinrich Lanz was the fourth of seven children born to Johann Peter Lanz and Luise Christiane Beckh. His professional preparation involved an apprenticeship at a Mannheim grocery store and subsequent technical studies at a trade school in Stuttgart. Before launching his own venture, he gained experience in his father's business, which specialized in fertilizers and machinery exported to England.

He remained active in Mannheim until his death on 1 February 1905 at age 67. His final resting place is located at the Mannheim Main Cemetery.
