Academic and Priestly Formation
Koch pursued his early education at the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf. He later enrolled at the University of Bonn, where he studied theology, philosophy, and education science. Following the completion of his academic examinations, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Cologne on 13 June 1980. His early career included extensive parish work and involvement in youth ministry. In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Koch as an auxiliary bishop of Cologne, assigning him the titular see of Ros Cré. His consecration took place on 7 May 2006, with Joachim Meisner officiating. He subsequently transitioned to the role of Bishop of Dresden-Meissen in 2013. In 2015, Pope Francis named him Archbishop of Berlin, a process that involved an election by the local Berlin church and subsequent papal confirmation. He was formally installed in Berlin on 16 March 2015.
Public Advocacy and Synodal Work
As a member of the German Bishops' Conference, Koch has addressed complex social and theological questions. He chaired the Commission for Marriage and the Family and represented his peers at the 2015 Synod on the Family. His public commentary has covered migration, same-sex marriage, and pastoral care. While he has criticized the labeling of anti-immigrant protesters and defended traditional definitions of marriage, he has also called for a different pastoral approach toward homosexuals and requested forgiveness for past church discrimination based on sexual orientation.
