Meriton reached a valuation of approximately $7.2 billion by September 2023, marking a significant milestone for the firm founded by Harry Triguboff. Born in Dalian, China, in 1933, he emerged as a dominant force in the Australian real estate market, eventually overseeing the construction of more than 55,000 residential apartments and townhouses across the country.
Early Migration and Initial Ventures
Before his success in Australian property, Triguboff spent his formative years in the Jewish community of Tianjin. His family arrived in Australia in 1948 following a difficult post-war period. After completing his education at the University of Leeds, he returned to Australia, where he became a citizen in 1961. His early professional efforts were varied, ranging from operating a taxi fleet to managing a milk round in Chatswood.

Take the IQ test →Founding and Expanding Meriton
The transition to property development began after a failed project to build his own home in Roseville, where he was forced to finish the construction himself. In 1963, he purchased a block of land in Tempe to build eight units. He later adopted the name Meriton from a development project on Meriton Street in Gladesville. By 2010, the company was developing roughly 1,000 apartments annually, a rate that eventually tripled by 2015.
Building Disputes and Operations
Meriton has faced consistent legal and maintenance challenges regarding building quality. Major developments such as World Tower and the Regis Towers were subjects of significant litigation regarding construction defects and safety issues. Despite these disputes, the business expanded into hospitality. In 2023, the company opened new hotel sites in Canberra, Melbourne, and Liverpool, bringing the total number of Meriton Suites to 23 properties.
Political Engagement and Views
Triguboff is a vocal participant in public policy debates, particularly concerning urban density and population growth. He has consistently advocated for policies aimed at expanding Australia's population to 100 million. His lobbying efforts have included calls for the declassification of national parks to facilitate new housing developments and requests for the federal government to influence Reserve Bank interest rates to improve housing affordability.
