Harrison Afful first gained national prominence in the Ghana Premier League, where his defensive play for Asante Kotoko earned him the title of Player of the Year. Professional Development
Starting his path at the Feyenoord Academy, Afful logged 148 appearances and scored 11 goals. His move to Asante Kotoko, facilitated by a contract clause, allowed him to secure the 2007–08 league title. Following unsuccessful trials in Europe and Africa, he established himself in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 with Espérance de Tunis. Over six seasons, he made more than 180 appearances, contributing significantly to four league titles.

Afful became a consistent figure in the CAF Champions League, representing Espérance de Tunis in three consecutive finals. He secured the 2011 title by scoring the winning goal in the second leg against Wydad Casablanca. Internationally, he made his debut for the Ghana national team at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. He subsequently appeared in four additional AFCON tournaments and represented his country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

In 2015, the fullback moved to the United States to join the Columbus Crew. His immediate impact helped the team advance to the MLS Cup 2015 during his debut season.
