SELCO India emerged in 1995 as a deliberate mechanism to distribute solar power technology to rural households. Academic Foundation
Born in 1967 at Kundapura Taluk, Hande completed his early education at the Ispat English Medium School in Rourkela, Orissa. His focus on energy systems solidified at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where he earned an undergraduate degree in energy engineering in 1990. He subsequently moved to the United States to continue his research, obtaining both a master’s degree and a PhD in energy engineering from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

The establishment of SELCO India marked a shift toward using social enterprise as a tool for poverty reduction. The company provided energy services specifically targeting rural populations that lacked consistent electrical infrastructure. Hande maintained active management of the company for nearly two decades, overseeing initiatives that focused on the long-term utility of solar assets for local users. In 2014, he transitioned his professional focus to become the CEO of the SELCO Foundation.
Professional Recognition
Hande’s methodology received significant external validation through multiple accolades. In 2005, SELCO India was honored with the Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy, a distinction it received again in 2007 for outstanding achievement. During that period, he was named Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the Schwab Foundation and the Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation. In 2011, he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his work in pragmatic solar technology implementation. Additional honors include the 2011 Karnataka Rajyotsava Prashasti, a Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Massachusetts in 2013, and the distinguished alumnus award from IIT Kharagpur in 2014.
