Hans Sebald Beham

German artist (1500-1550)

The production of approximately 252 engravings, 18 etchings, and 1500 woodcuts established Sebald Beham as a dominant figure among the Little Masters. Operating within the German Renaissance, this artist specialized in intricate, miniature-scale works that appealed to the burgeoning bourgeois collector class, effectively bridging the gap between traditional fine art and accessible, mass-produced visual culture.

Early Career and Exile

Born in 1500 in the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg, Beham entered the artistic scene as a journeyman painter by 1521. By 1525, he achieved the status of master with his own workshop. That same year, local authorities banished him alongside his brother Barthel and Georg Pencz under charges of blasphemy and heresy. These labels stemmed from the group's perceived Lutheran sympathies. Although he briefly returned to his home city, legal troubles resurfaced in 1528 when he faced accusations of plagiarizing Albrecht Dürer’s unpublished manuscript regarding the proportions of the horse. This threat of litigation forced his departure.

The Little Masters and Printmaking

Beham earned his place in the German printmaking school known as the Little Masters, a title reflecting the diminutive, postage-stamp size of his detailed engravings. His output was vast, incorporating woodcuts for books, playing cards, and wallpaper. His aesthetic was heavily influenced by the shadow of Dürer, yet he developed a distinct style often incorporating classical mythology and scenes of peasant life, frequently imbued with erotic themes. While his early work sometimes utilized the 'HSP' monogram, he transitioned to 'HSB' after establishing himself in Frankfurt.

Transition to Frankfurt

Following his second exit from Nuremberg, Beham worked in cities including Ingolstadt and Munich, where he documented the 1530 entry of Emperor Charles V. By 1532, he settled permanently in Frankfurt, gaining formal citizenship there in 1540. During this period, he solidified his reputation not only as a printmaker but also as an author of artist manuals. These manuals, covering human proportions and horse anatomy, offered simplified, affordable alternatives to Dürer's writings, securing long-term commercial success.

Painting and Personal Life

Though primarily a printmaker, Beham engaged in diverse artistic ventures, including stained glass design and painting. His only surviving panel painting, depicting scenes from the life of King David, resides in the Louvre, commissioned by Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg. His prayer-book miniatures also survive in Aschaffenburg. In his personal life, he married twice; his first wife, Anna, is depicted alongside him in 1540 medal models. After becoming a widower, he married Elizabeth Wolf in 1549, the daughter of a Büdingen shoemaker, before his death in 1550.
