The portrait of artist Venny Soldan, completed in 1887, garnered significant attention at the Paris Salon for its departure from standard bourgeois representations. By depicting a female painter working on the floor with clay in her hands, the work challenged contemporary expectations, leading critics to label its informal, bohemian style as indecent.
Early Training and Paris Years
Born in Stockholm in 1864, Hanna Hirsch-Pauli began her artistic education at August Malmströms konstskola, where she studied from 1876 until 1879. She subsequently attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts between 1881 and 1885. Seeking further professional development, she moved to Paris to enroll at the Académie Colarossi, studying there from 1885 to 1887. During this period, she shared a studio with Eva Bonnier and established connections with various Nordic women artists living abroad.

Her painting techniques typically aligned with the French juste milieu rather than impressionist movements. Her 1887 work Breakfast Time, currently held at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, drew critical scrutiny for its thick application of paint to illustrate light on a tablecloth. Despite such reactions, she achieved recognition at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, receiving a third-class medal. She later participated in the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago.
Portraiture and Career
Following her marriage to the painter Georg Pauli in 1887, she traveled to Italy. Her professional output remained focused on portraits, documenting many writers and artists within her social circle. Notable works include a 1932 portrait of author Selma Lagerlöf and the 1907 group portrait Friends, which depicts Ellen Key reading aloud. Beyond her painting, she maintained memberships in organizations including Tolfterna and Svenska hem, while also holding a position at the Valand School of Fine Arts.
