July 1945 saw the birth of Han Qide in Cixi City, Zhejiang Province. Over the following decades, he transitioned from clinical practice in Shaanxi Province to the leadership of major medical and political institutions within the People’s Republic of China, ultimately shaping the administration of both national science associations and university medical faculties.
Medical Training and Early Career
Han Qide completed his undergraduate medical studies between 1962 and 1968 at the First Medical College of Shanghai, which later became part of Fudan University. Following his studies, he served as a physician and medical staff member across various hospitals in Shaanxi Province for over a decade. His clinical foundation was bolstered by postgraduate work at Xi’an Medical College, an institution that eventually integrated into Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Academic administrative duties became a defining feature of his career as he transitioned into teaching at the Beijing Medical College. Han presided over Beijing Medical University during its final years before it merged with Peking University. Following this institutional change, he assumed the roles of head of the Peking University Health Science Center and executive vice-president of Peking University. He later served as president of the PKU Health Science Centre and chairperson of the board.
Political and Scientific Governance
Beyond his academic roles, Han held significant political office. He served as chairman of the Jiusan Society Central Committee from 2002 until 2017. His legislative work included two terms as vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress between 2003 and 2013. Additionally, he acted as vice-chairman of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In 1997, he was elected as an academician of the Academic Division of Life Sciences and Medical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and he led the China Association for Science and Technology from 2006 to 2016.
