H. G. Wells: The Draper's Apprentice Who Invented the Future
A broken leg at age eight, which confined a poor shopkeeper's son to bed with nothing to do but read, is as good a place as any to locate the origin of modern science fiction. That boy grew up to imagine time travel, invisibility, alien invasion, and genetic engineering before any of them had names — and then, in 1914, to describe an atomic bomb that "continues to explode" for days, a passage a physicist later credited with sparking the theory that made real nuclear weapons possible.
From China Shop to Science Scholarship
Herbert George Wells was born September 21, 1866, in Bromley, Kent, the youngest of four children of Joseph and Sarah Wells, whose income came unreliably from a failing china shop and Joseph's cricket career. Financial hardship shaped his childhood directly: at eight, a broken leg left him bedridden and turned him into a voracious reader, and in his teens he was apprenticed as a draper, a trade he despised. He escaped it by working as a student-teacher and eventually winning a scholarship to study biology at London's Normal School of Science under T. H. Huxley, Darwin's most famous defender — an education that gave Wells's later fiction its scientific spine. He excelled in biology and physics but lost his scholarship in 1887 after failing geology, and tuberculosis later forced him out of a teaching career and into full-time writing.
Inventing Science Fiction
Wells's breakthrough came with The Time Machine in 1895, followed in rapid succession by The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898) — a run of "scientific romances" that invented or codified nearly every foundational device of the genre: time travel, genetic manipulation, invisibility, and interplanetary invasion. Alongside Jules Verne, Wells is credited as one of the fathers of science fiction, and unlike much of what followed him, his prose remained, in the judgment of later critics, unusually easy and entertaining to read even as it carried serious scientific and social speculation. His 1901 bestseller Anticipations, subtitled "An Experiment in Prophecy," extended that speculative habit into nonfiction forecasting, predicting technological developments that included, decades ahead of the fact, weapons of mass destruction.
The Book That Helped Build the Bomb
Wells's most consequential act of prophecy came in his 1914 novel The World Set Free, which imagined "atomic bombs" that would continue detonating for days after release — a scientifically loose but conceptually prescient image. The physicist Leó Szilárd later acknowledged that reading Wells's novel helped inspire his own theoretical work on the nuclear chain reaction, work that fed directly into the science behind the atomic bomb, making Wells's fiction an unusually direct, traceable link between imaginative literature and one of the twentieth century's defining technologies.
Historian for the General Reader
Wells's ambitions were never confined to fiction. His 1920 book The Outline of History attempted to compress the whole of human history into an accessible narrative for ordinary readers, and despite a mixed reception from professional historians, it was widely praised as one of the best introductory histories available and became an enormous popular success, part of Wells's broader project of using plain, readable prose to educate a mass audience on subjects normally reserved for specialists.
A Socialist Who Distrusted the Voter
Politically, Wells was a committed socialist who joined the Fabian Society and twice ran unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Labour candidate, but his relationship with organized socialism was combative rather than comfortable — he broke publicly with the Fabians in 1909 over what he considered their insufficient appetite for radical, mass-scale reform. His recurring political vision was a global "World State": a planned, scientifically administered society that would abolish nationalism and reward merit. That vision had an authoritarian undercurrent — Wells distrusted parliamentary democracy on the grounds that ordinary voters could not grasp complex world affairs, and at times argued for restricting political power to scientists, engineers, and administrators rather than the general electorate. He met with figures including Lenin, Stalin, and Roosevelt to press his ideas internationally, and his advocacy for universal rights is credited with influencing the postwar Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
A Crowded Personal Life
Wells married his cousin Isabel Mary Wells in 1891; the marriage collapsed after she discovered his affair with a former student, Amy Catherine Robbins, whom he married in 1895 and stayed with, formally, for three decades. The marriage did not stop a long string of affairs, including with the writers Amber Reeves and Rebecca West, both of whom bore him children outside the marriage, and Wells remained involved in the lives of his children by multiple relationships throughout his life.
Death and Late Life
Wells died on August 13, 1946, in London at age seventy-nine, having published roughly fifty novels along with an enormous volume of essays, popular science, and political writing across six decades of near-continuous output.
Why Wells Is Called a Genius
The claim survives scrutiny in a narrow but concrete sense: Wells's scientific training under Huxley let him build speculative premises — time travel, genetic manipulation, atomic weapons — on plausible-sounding scientific reasoning rather than pure fantasy, and at least once, with The World Set Free, that speculation demonstrably fed forward into real physics through Szilárd's own account of his inspiration, a level of real-world causal influence almost no other novelist can claim. The honest counter-case is substantial, though: Wells's forecasting record is celebrated selectively, remembered for its hits and quietly forgiven its many misses, and even sympathetic assessments describe his prose as valuable chiefly for being "easy and entertaining" rather than for any deep literary ambition — ideas delivered fast and plainly took priority over style. His political thought carried the same trade-off further: the same mind that dreamed of a rational World State also concluded ordinary voters could not be trusted with it, favoring rule by "scientists, organizers, engineers, and others of merit" — a strain of thought later critics treat less as genius than as a serious and consequential blind spot in an otherwise expansive imagination.
Legacy
Wells's scientific romances remain in continuous adaptation across film, radio, and television more than a century after publication, and craters on both the Moon and Mars have been named in his honor. His warning that "human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe" is still quoted as a summary of the anxious, technology-driven century he did more than almost anyone to imagine before it arrived.
