Gustave Dumas

mathematician (1872-1955)

The doctoral dissertation completed at the Sorbonne in 1904, titled Sur les fonctions à caractère algébrique dans le voisinage d'un point donné, established the academic trajectory of Swiss mathematician Gustave Dumas. Across a career spanning several decades, he contributed to the field of algebraic geometry, maintaining long-term institutional ties in Switzerland and France.

Academic Formation and Early Research

Dumas pursued his higher education across three distinct institutions: the University of Lausanne, the University of Paris, and ETH Zurich. His early research focused on polynomial theory. In 1906, he secured his habilitation qualification at the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich with the dissertation Sur quelques cas d'irréductibilité des polynômes à coefficients rationnels. This work was subsequently published in the Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées.

Teaching and Professional Service

From 1906 until 1913, Dumas instructed students in higher mathematics at the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich. He transitioned to the University of Lausanne in 1913, where he joined the Engineering School. He began as a professor extraordinarius, advancing to the rank of professor ordinarius in 1916. His tenure at the university concluded with his retirement in 1942. Beyond his classroom duties, he presided over the Swiss Mathematical Society for a two-year term starting in 1922 and served as an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Bologna in 1928.

Influence on Mathematics

Dumas engaged with the mathematical challenges of his era, particularly regarding algebraic curves and surfaces. His publication record includes research on the Newton polygon and algebraic planes, as well as methods for resolving singularities in surfaces. During his tenure at Lausanne, he acted as a mentor to Georges de Rham. De Rham served as his assistant before completing his graduation in 1925.
