Professional Formation
Born in 1863 in the Klara Church Parish, Stockholm, Lindgren pursued formal training at the KTH School of Architecture between 1881 and 1885. He continued his education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts from 1885 until 1887. Following his studies, he completed a three-year international research trip across Germany, Italy, and France, which influenced his later approach to building design.

In 1887, Lindgren joined the agency responsible for the administration of government buildings, known as the Överintendentsämbetet. By 1899, he attained the rank of hovintendent, or superintendent. His professional commitment extended into academia starting in 1905, when he accepted a teaching position focusing on the history of building art at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
Diverse Architectural Portfolio
His work spanned varied functions, including industrial sites, residential housing, and civic infrastructure. Notable early projects included the 1887 Whitlockska huset, the 1890 Stora Bryggeriet, and the 1898 Tattersall, now referred to as the IVA-house. His portfolio also encompassed significant institutional designs such as the Stockholm police station on Kungsholmen, various prison facilities in Gothenburg, Malmö, and Långholmen, as well as the 1906 crematorium at Norra begravningsplatsen.
Legacy and Research
Beyond his built designs, Lindgren contributed to the second edition of the Swedish encyclopedia Nordisk familjebok. His personal life included marriage to Anna Birch and he was the father of the architect Gustaf Birch-Lindgren. He remained active in the architectural field until his death in 1930 within the Engelbrekt church parish.
