Guðni Jóhannesson served as the sixth president of Iceland from 2016 until 2024, securing the office as the youngest person to hold the position. An academic historian by trade, his transition into national leadership followed frequent appearances on television providing historical context during the 2016 political crisis triggered by the disclosure of the Panama Papers.
Academic and Professional Background
Born in Reykjavík in 1968, he pursued extensive international studies. He completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Warwick in 1991, followed by a Master of Arts from the University of Iceland in 1997. He earned an MSt at the University of Oxford’s St Antony's College in 1999 and a PhD in history from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2003. Before his presidency, he held teaching positions at the University of Iceland, Bifröst University, and the University of London. His scholarly work focused on modern Icelandic history, specifically the Cod Wars, the Icelandic financial crisis, and the presidency itself. Beyond academia, he worked as a translator, notably rendering four Stephen King novels into Icelandic.

In May 2016, following the public fallout of the Panama Papers, he launched an independent presidential campaign. His platform included advocacy for a constitutional provision allowing for citizen-initiated referendums. He won the June 2016 election with 39.1% of the vote. Throughout his tenure, he remained unaffiliated with any political party, aiming to project a non-partisan image. In the 2020 election, he secured re-election with 92.2% of the vote, maintaining exceptionally high approval ratings throughout his two terms.
Presidential Tenure and Diplomacy
During his term, he managed complex domestic political processes, including the formation of a government following the 2016 parliamentary elections. His diplomatic service was recognized with several high-level international honors, including the Knight of the Order of the Elephant in 2017, the Royal Order of the Seraphim in 2018, and the Grand Cross Special Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2019. He also received the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of the White Rose of Finland and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav in 2017.
