The Awa'uq Massacre in 1784 remains the most notorious event of Grigory Shelikhov's expeditions, occurring during his campaign to establish a presence on Kodiak Island. As a merchant and seafarer operating within the Russian Empire, he focused on expanding fur trading networks into the Aleutian Islands and the mainland of North America.
Founding the Fur Trade Enterprise
Starting in 1775, Shelikhov directed merchant vessels toward the Kuril and Aleutian Islands. By 1783, he formalized these interests by partnering with Ivan Larionovich Golikov to establish the Shelikhov-Golikov Company. This entity served as the direct precursor to the royal Russian-American Company, which consolidated control over regional assets in 1799. To manage his expanding enterprise, Shelikhov recruited Alexandr Baranov in 1790.

In 1784, Shelikhov arrived at Three Saints Bay on Kodiak Island, utilizing the ships Three Hierarchs and St. Simon. While Unalaska existed as a regional point, Shelikhov’s mission sought to build the first permanent Russian settlement on the island. During this period, his forces engaged the indigenous Alutiiq nation at Refuge Rock on Sitkalidak Island. Using cannons and firearms, the expedition killed hundreds of Alutiiq people and detained scores of hostages to secure local submission.
Career and Travel Logistics
Shelikhov’s seafaring life included significant logistical challenges. During the winter of 1786–1787, he was stranded at Bol’shereck in Kamchatka after the Three Hierarchs was swept out to sea by strong winds. He successfully traversed Shelikhov Bay shortly thereafter. Upon his death in 1795 at Irkutsk, he left behind an extensive network of trade routes and family connections, including his son-in-law Nikolai Rezanov, who later played a crucial role in the management of the Russian-American Company.
