Gongsun Long

Chinese philosopher of the 3rd century BCE of the School of Names

The Gongsun Longzi anthology contains the remnants of an intellectual legacy that once challenged the foundations of ancient Chinese discourse. As a leading figure in the School of Names, this philosopher operated during the Warring States period, navigating a martial culture by promoting peaceful dispute resolution and examining the intricate relationships between language, reality, and logic.

Historical Context and School of Names

Active during the 3rd century BCE, Gongsun Long was a central figure among the Logicians, also known as the School of Names. He managed a school and secured patronage from local rulers, allowing him to focus on the systematic study of logical relationships. Despite his influence, primary source material is scarce; of his original fourteen essays, only six remain. His work is primarily known through the surviving text Gongsun Longzi.

Logic and Paradox

Gongsun Long gained prominence for a series of paradoxes that tested the limits of verbal reasoning. His arguments, such as the assertion that white horses are not horses, have drawn comparisons to Greek logic. These paradoxes focus on the ambiguity of the negative copula, distinguishing between class inclusion and identity. While some observers categorize his writings as pure logical discourse, others dismiss them as sophisticated wordplay.

Rectification of Names

Central to his philosophy was the concept of ming-shi, or the relationship between names and reality. He argued that order is maintained when names correctly reflect the actuality of things. If a name fails to match its corresponding substance, disorder ensues. By ensuring that terminology remains precise, he believed society could avoid the doubt and confusion that plagued the political atmosphere of his time.

Extant Essays

Beyond his famous White Horse dialogue, his remaining work includes several shorter discourses. On Pointing at Things examines reference and designation, while On Hardness and Whiteness uses the properties of a stone to explore logical existence. Other surviving essays include On Understanding Change, On Name and Substance, and the Storehouse of Traces. These texts provide a window into his method of reconciling philosophical contradictions.
