Early Life and Entry into Cinema
Born Gloria Anne Borrego Galla on December 16, 1933, in Denver, Colorado, she moved to the Philippines with her parents in 1937. After growing up in Mabini, Pangasinan, she relocated to Manila to pursue a career in show business. She secured minor roles in productions like Ang Bahay sa Lumang Gulod before signing with Sampaguita Pictures, where she achieved her first major breakthrough in the 1952 film Madame X.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Romero became the Philippines' highest-paid box-office draw. Her portrayal of a tobacco-smoking maiden in the 1954 comedy Dalagang Ilocana earned her the FAMAS Award for Best Actress. Beyond acting, she served as a prominent model, including becoming one of the first postwar endorsers for Coca-Cola, and performed in the annual Lenten play Martir sa Golgota.
Career Evolution and Later Recognition
Following a departure from Sampaguita Pictures, she transitioned to more complex, mature roles. In the late 1980s, she achieved a critical resurgence with performances in Saan Nagtatago ang Pag-ibig? and Nagbabagang Luha, securing additional FAMAS accolades. Her career culminated in late-career successes like Tanging Yaman and her final film, Rainbow's Sunset, in 2018. She passed away in Quezon City on January 25, 2025.
