A total time of one minute 39.32 seconds over two runs secured the men's slalom gold medal for Giuliano Razzoli at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Competing in fog and sleet at Whistler, he finished 0.16 seconds ahead of silver medalist Ivica Kostelic to become the first Italian man to claim the title since 1988.

Early Career and National Promotion

Born on 18 December 1984 in Castelnovo ne' Monti, located in Reggio Emilia, Italy, Razzoli developed his expertise in the slalom discipline. He achieved a significant breakthrough in 2006 at the Italian Championships in Santa Caterina, Valfurva, where he secured first place. This victory facilitated his transition to the Italian National A team. His introduction to international competition occurred on his 22nd birthday during a World Cup slalom race held in Alta Badia.

World Cup Success

Throughout his professional career, Razzoli focused exclusively on slalom racing. He recorded eleven podium finishes in total during his World Cup appearances, all of which occurred in his specialized discipline. His first victory at the World Cup level was achieved in Zagreb, Croatia, in January 2010. Following his Olympic success, he secured a second career World Cup win in March 2011 in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

Recognition and Legacy

In recognition of his athletic achievements, particularly his gold medal performance in Vancouver, Razzoli was appointed a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2010. His Olympic victory remained Italy's only gold medal during those particular Winter Games. Having retired from professional alpine ski racing, he is remembered for ending a 22-year gap in Italian slalom success, matching the legacy set by Alberto Tomba at the 1988 Calgary Games.
