Academic and Early Professional Background
Born in 1964 in Klaipėda, Nausėda completed his secondary education before enrolling at Vilnius University to study industrial economics, graduating in 1987. Between 1990 and 1992, he participated in an academic exchange program at the University of Mannheim. He defended his PhD thesis on inflation and stagflation in 1993. His early career included roles at the Research Institute for Economics and Privatization and the Lithuanian Competition Council. From 1994 to 2000, he served at the Bank of Lithuania, eventually becoming the director of the monetary policy department.

Before his entry into electoral politics, Nausėda spent nearly two decades in the private banking sector. He worked as a chief economist and adviser to the chairman of AB Vilniaus Bankas from 2000 to 2008. Subsequently, he served as a financial analyst and chief economist at SEB bankas until 2018. During this period, he also maintained academic ties, serving as an associate professor at the Vilnius University Business School starting in 2009.
Presidency and Regional Diplomacy
Inaugurated as president on 12 July 2019, Nausėda oversaw Lithuania's response to significant regional instability, including the 2020–2021 Belarusian protests. He implemented humanitarian measures by opening borders to Belarusian citizens and declared the Belarusian administration illegitimate following the disputed 2020 election. His foreign policy also focused on regional security and energy concerns, specifically regarding the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant, and maintaining close diplomatic ties with Poland. He was re-elected for a second term on 26 May 2024.
