Gintautas Paluckas served as the 18th prime minister of Lithuania from December 2024 until his resignation on 4 August 2025. His tenure as head of government followed a lengthy career within the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, where he previously held leadership roles and multiple terms as an elected official within the national parliament.
Early Career and Education
Born in 1979 in Panevėžys, Paluckas pursued academic training at Vilnius University, graduating from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics in 2003 and the International Business School in 2004. He also studied English in London between 2000 and 2001. His early professional life included a position as a chief specialist at the Lithuanian social insurance institution, Sodra, and work as an assistant to European Parliament member Justas Paleckis. Between 2007 and 2009, he served as the director of administration for the Vilnius city municipality.

Paluckas joined the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party in 2003. He rose through the organizational ranks to become executive secretary and a member of the party board by 2013. In 2017, he won the party leadership election, emphasizing a policy platform that included progressive taxation and support for worker cooperatives. His initial tenure as leader ended in January 2021 following the party's performance in the 2020 parliamentary elections. He later returned to the party's top leadership position in 2025 after Vilija Blinkevičiūtė declined to serve.
Government and Legislative Tenure
Serving as Deputy Mayor of Vilnius from 2015 to 2019, Paluckas later transitioned to national legislative roles. He was elected to the Seimas in 2020 and maintained his parliamentary seat through the 2024 elections. In late 2024, he was nominated for the office of prime minister after Blinkevičiūtė withdrew her candidacy for the role. His cabinet formation included the Dawn of Nemunas party, which triggered public demonstrations. His premiership concluded in August 2025 following his announcement to resign amid investigations by law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies regarding his business interests.
