Her professional career gained momentum with early appearances on Law & Order and Ed. In 2006, she secured the role of Margene Heffman in the HBO series Big Love, portraying a wife in a polygamous family until 2011. Her filmography includes roles in Mona Lisa Smile, Walk the Line, and He's Just Not That Into You. In 2011, she began her portrayal of Snow White and Mary Margaret Blanchard on the ABC fantasy drama Once Upon a Time, a role she inhabited until the series finale.

She expanded into voice acting, most notably as the lead character Judy Hopps in the Zootopia franchise, starting in 2016 and reprising the role for the 2025 release.
