Gilmar

Brazilian footballer (1930-2013)

Ninety-four international appearances for the Brazil national team established Gilmar as a fixture of the sport during the middle of the twentieth century. Between 1958 and 1966, he served as the primary goalkeeper for three successive World Cup squads, remaining the sole player in his position to secure consecutive starting victories in the tournament.

Early Career and Corinthians

Born in Santos in 1930 to parents Gilberto and Maria, Gilmar began his professional path at the local club Jabaquara. He transferred to Corinthians in 1951, where he remained for a decade. During this tenure, he secured three Campeonato Paulista titles in 1951, 1952, and 1954, as well as two Torneio Rio–São Paulo trophies in 1953 and 1954.

Success with Santos

In 1961, the goalkeeper joined Santos, becoming a key component of the squad nicknamed Os Santásticos. His tenure included five Campeonato Paulista wins between 1962 and 1968, and five Taça Brasil titles from 1961 to 1965. Internationally, he helped the club claim two Copa Libertadores and two Intercontinental Cups in 1962 and 1963, defeating Benfica and Milan, respectively.

Goalkeeping Legacy

The IFFHS elected Gilmar as the premier Brazilian goalkeeper of the twentieth century. Observers noted his composure under pressure and his ability to project stability to his defensive line. His approach was characterized by agility, quick reflexes, and a measured demeanor on the field. In 1998, he received the FIFA Order of Merit for his contributions to the sport.

Final Years

Following a career that spanned various domestic and international tournaments, including multiple runner-up finishes in the Copa América, Gilmar retired from active play.
