Early Development and Professional Transition
Born in 1944 in Leggiuno, Riva experienced a difficult childhood marked by the loss of his father in 1953 and his mother shortly thereafter. Following his time at a religious boarding school, he worked in a lift factory while playing amateur football for Laveno Mombello. He turned professional in 1962 with Legnano. His performance in Serie C attracted the attention of Cagliari president Enrico Rocca, who secured the nineteen-year-old's transfer to the Sardinian club for 37 million Lire.

After helping Cagliari earn promotion to Serie A in 1964, Riva became the centerpiece of the squad. He proved his efficiency as a striker by winning the capocannoniere title for league top scorer during the 1966–67 season. His influence grew as he led the team to secure the Serie A title in 1969–70, marking the first time a club south of Rome achieved this honor. He concluded that campaign as the league's top scorer once again.
International Impact and Tactical Profile
Riva provided a potent offensive presence for Italy, recording 35 goals in 42 appearances between 1965 and 1974. His technical ability, characterized by a powerful left foot and effective aerial skills, earned him the nickname Roar of Thunder from journalist Gianni Brera. Beyond his scoring accomplishments, he finished second in the 1969 Ballon d'Or and third in 1970.
Retirement and Post-Playing Career
After ending his playing career in 1976, Riva remained involved in the sport. He served briefly as Cagliari's president during the 1986–87 season. Subsequently, he transitioned into an administrative role, acting as the director and team manager for the Italian national team from 1988 until 2013. He passed away in Cagliari in 2024.
