Early Career and Court Life
Baptized in 1566, Basile originated from a middle-class family in the Kingdom of Naples. His professional life involved significant service as a soldier and courtier for various Italian princes, including a tenure under the doge of Venice. During his time in Venice, he began composing poetry. Upon returning to the Kingdom of Naples, he entered the service of Don Marino II Caracciolo, the prince of Avellino, to whom he dedicated his 1618 idyll, L'Aretusa.

Basile's literary output began to surface in 1604 with a preface to the Vaiasseide, written by his friend and fellow Neapolitan author Giulio Cesare Cortese. In 1608, he released a poem titled Il Pianto della Vergine. His broader body of work, which includes the Lirici marinisti, demonstrates his active participation in the literary culture of his time. By the end of his life, he had attained the title of Conte di Torone.
The Tale of Tales
His magnum opus, titled Lo cunto de li cunti overo lo trattenemiento de peccerille, reached the public in two volumes released in 1634 and 1636. Managed by his sister Adriana and issued under the pseudonym Gian Alesio Abbatutis, the collection was later titled Il Pentamerone. Set within the forests and castles of the Basilicata region, specifically Acerenza, these stories were eventually recognized by the Brothers Grimm as the first national collection of fairy tales, cementing their importance in literary history.
