A personal best throw of 73.38 metres positioned Gerd Kanter as the author of the fourth best discus mark in history. Achieved on 4 September 2006 in Helsingborg, Sweden, this distance remains the national record for Estonia, underscoring a competitive career that spanned nearly two decades and saw him dominate global throwing events.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Born in Tallinn in 1979 and educated at Pärnu-Jaagupi Basic School and Tallinn University of Technology, Kanter began his path in athletics in Estonia. His initial Olympic experience occurred in 2004, though he failed to reach the final. The following year marked a significant shift in his trajectory as he secured silver at the 2005 World Championships and claimed victories at both the World University Games and the European Cup. It was during this period that he first surpassed the 70-metre threshold.
