Early Influences and Education
Born in Rotterdam on 14 April 1933, Endenburg attended the Werkplaats Kindergemeenschap, a Quaker boarding school. During his time there, he encountered the sociocratic ideas championed by Kees Boeke and Betty Cadbury. This educational environment emphasized student involvement in consensus decision-making, a concept that would later underpin his professional methodology. He maintained his connection to academic and theoretical development throughout his life, eventually earning a doctoral degree from the University of Twente in 1992.

In the mid-1960s, Endenburg became the general manager of his family business, Endenburg Elektrotechniek BV. He utilized this engineering company as a testing ground for his organizational theories. By the 1970s, he successfully integrated his sociocratic approach into the firm's daily operations. To formalize and disseminate these practices, he established the Sociocratic Center Netherlands in 1978, serving as its director to guide other organizations in adopting similar structural designs.
Academic Contributions and Legacy
Endenburg bridged the gap between industrial practice and academic research. His doctoral dissertation, titled 'Sociocratie als Sociaal Ontwerp,' provided the foundation for his English-language publications, 'Sociocracy as Social Design' and 'Sociocracy: the Organization of Decision-Making.' His expertise led to an appointment as an honorary professor in Organizational Learning at Maastricht University in 1992. He continued his work as an author and teacher until his death in Rotterdam on 29 July 2025.
