At age 25, Butler moved to London to pursue acting. His initial professional experiences included varied employment as a waiter and toy demonstrator. His breakthrough in theatre occurred when a former colleague cast him in a stage production of Coriolanus. He subsequently secured a role in a theatrical adaptation of Trainspotting at the Edinburgh Festival. His early film appearances included roles in Mrs Brown, the James Bond feature Tomorrow Never Dies, and Tale of the Mummy.
Breakthrough Roles and Musical Performance
Butler gained prominence in 2000 by playing the title character in Dracula 2000 and the historical figure Attila the Hun in the miniseries Attila. In 2003, he appeared in films including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life and Timeline. The following year, director Joel Schumacher cast him as the title character in The Phantom of the Opera. Despite having no formal musical training, Butler undertook vocal coaching for the role, ultimately earning a Satellite Award nomination.

The 2006 fantasy film 300 served as a pivotal moment in his career, where he portrayed King Leonidas. To prepare for the physical demands of the part, he engaged in a rigorous four-month training regimen. In the 2010s, he expanded his portfolio by providing his voice to the How to Train Your Dragon franchise and starring as Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the Has Fallen action series.
