Geraint Thomas

Welsh racing cyclist

The 2018 Tour de France concluded with Geraint Thomas securing the overall victory, marking the first time a Welshman reached the top step of the podium in the race's history. This achievement cemented his reputation as one of the few cyclists in the modern era to excel at the highest level in both track and road disciplines.

Early Development and Track Dominance

Born in 1986 in Cardiff, Thomas began his cycling journey at Maindy Stadium with the Maindy Flyers Cycling Club. He attended Whitchurch High School, developing his skills alongside future teammates. His track career was defined by consistent elite success, including world championship titles in 2007, 2008, and 2012. Transition to Road Racing

While early road victories included the 2004 Paris–Roubaix Juniors, Thomas eventually shifted focus entirely to the road. His professional trajectory saw him compete for teams such as Barloworld, where he made his Tour de France debut in 2007 as the race's youngest participant. He later became a vital domestique for Chris Froome before establishing his own credentials as a Grand Tour contender.

Grand Tour Success and Recognition

Thomas claimed the yellow jersey at the 2018 Tour de France after winning consecutive stages 11 and 12. His versatility remained evident through various victories in one-week stage races, including the 2016 Paris–Nice, the 2017 Tour of the Alps, and the 2022 Tour de Suisse. Following his Tour de France win, he earned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. His career is marked by multiple Grand Tour podium finishes, including second place in the 2023 Giro d'Italia.
