Lozanov formulated the theory of suggestology during the early 1960s, proposing that suggestion plays a fundamental role in the learning process. This led to the creation of suggestopedia, an experimental branch of suggestology applied specifically to pedagogical settings. The methodology aimed to increase learning speed by utilizing particular environmental conditions and mental states. In the 1970s, his work underwent a rigorous audit by a committee on language learning, and in 1980, UNESCO certified his method as a highly effective approach for second language acquisition.
International Expansion and Institutional Legacy
Following his departure from Bulgaria, Lozanov settled in Western Europe to expand his reach. He established the International Centre for Desuggestology and Suggestopedia in Vienna, Austria, and later collaborated with the linguist and pedagogue Dr. Evelyna Gateva to form the Lozanov International Centre for Teacher Training in Vorarlberg, Austria, in 2005. His methodology was also implemented in North America, including training programs for diplomats and defense officers in Washington, D.C., and Ottawa-Gatineau. By 2006, the International Association of Suggestology was founded in Oslo, Norway, with Lozanov serving as honorary chairman.
