Early Development and Training
Born in 1951 in Toowoomba, Rush attended Everton Park State High School before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. Rush maintained a consistent presence in theatre, taking on classical and absurdist roles. In 1979, he appeared in Waiting for Godot alongside Mel Gibson. He later performed in international productions including Oleanna, The Winter's Tale, and The Importance of Being Earnest. In 2009, he made his Broadway debut in the absurdist comedy Exit the King, a performance that earned him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.
Film and Television Breakthroughs
His international film career expanded significantly with his portrayal of David Helfgott in the 1996 drama Shine, which won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. He subsequently appeared in high-profile roles, including Captain Hector Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Sir Francis Walsingham in Elizabeth.
