Gary Lee Weinrib, known professionally as Geddy Lee, began his path in music after his father's death forced him to find a way to support himself. Born in 1953 in North York, Ontario, the future bassist moved from school bands to joining the group Rush in September 1968, eventually becoming one of the most recognized figures in rock.
Early Influences and Career
Lee attended Newtonbrook Secondary School and Georges Vanier Secondary School. While he experimented with drums, trumpet, and clarinet during his school years, he focused his interests on the bass guitar. Early musical inspirations included Jack Bruce of Cream, John Entwistle of The Who, and Paul McCartney. After childhood friend Alex Lifeson invited him to replace original bassist Jeff Jones in Rush, Lee began playing professional gigs at venues such as Toronto's Gasworks and the Abbey Road Pub.

The band transitioned from performing at coffeehouses and high school dances to opening for acts such as Aerosmith and Kiss. As the group's bassist, singer, and keyboardist, Lee participated in every Rush album until the band's initial dissolution period between 2015 and 2025. His work on tracks like 1984's Red Sector A, which featured lyrics by drummer Neil Peart, reflected his family history as the son of Holocaust survivors from Poland who eventually settled in Canada.
Professional Recognition
Lee's technique on the bass guitar influenced numerous musicians, including Les Claypool and Cliff Burton. His career achievements include the release of a 2000 solo effort titled My Favourite Headache. In 1996, Lee and his bandmates became the first rock group to be named Officers of the Order of Canada. Later, the trio gained induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, solidifying his standing within the industry.
