Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger

German cartographer (1849–1913)

The F. W. Putzgers Historischer Schul-Atlas first appeared in Leipzig in 1877 as a resource for classroom instruction. Designed by a German educator to provide a accessible reference for history students, the atlas achieved immediate commercial success due to its low price point and remained a standard pedagogical tool throughout the subsequent century of German schooling.

Cartographic Contributions

Putzger’s most significant contribution to the field of cartography involved the editorial updates he provided for the Physikalisch-statistischer Atlas des deutschen Reiches, a publication originally created by Richard Andree and Oskar Peschel and issued by the publisher Verlag Velhagen & Klasing. His work on this volume allowed him to apply his skills in historical mapping to a broader scientific and statistical context.

Legacy of the Historical Atlas

The 1877 publication of the F. W. Putzgers Historischer Schul-Atlas established a long-standing legacy in the German education system. Its sustained relevance is demonstrated by its evolution into the current edition titled Putzger - Atlas und Chronik zur Weltgeschichte, published by Cornelsen in Berlin in 2002.
