Friedrich Weber

German entomologist, son of botanist Georg Heinrich Weber (1781–1823)

The career of Friedrich Weber is a useful demonstration of how entomology actually advances - not in a single leap, but in results that hold.

Friedrich Weber was born at Kiel in 1781. His recorded nationality is Duchy of Holstein. He was educated at Kiel University.

The eighteenth century turned natural philosophy into organised enquiry: expeditions, collections, academies and the beginnings of specialist training.

The institutions that housed his research were Kiel University, where the work centred on botany.

Entomology has repeatedly been the field where ecology and genetics were first worked out in practice.

The Duchy of Holstein setting is not incidental. National academies, funding and language decided which findings travelled and which stayed local, in this period as in ours.

The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.

Death came in 1823, at 42. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of entomology, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
