Frederik IX, the eldest son of King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine, was born on 11 March 1899 at Sorgenfri Palace. He reigned as King of Denmark from 1947 until his death in 1972, presiding over a period of rapid social modernization and the expansion of the Danish welfare state during the post-war decades.
Naval Service and Early Career
Breaking with established royal tradition, Frederik pursued a naval career rather than an army commission. He attended the Royal Danish Naval Academy and studied at the University of Copenhagen. Throughout his service in the Royal Danish Navy from 1917 to 1947, he ascended to the rank of rear admiral, holding several senior commands. During the occupation of Denmark by Nazi Germany, Frederik served as regent starting in 1942. He assumed this role after his father, King Christian X, was incapacitated by a horseback riding accident. Upon his father's death in April 1947, he ascended to the throne. His reign spanned the booming economic period of the 1960s, a time marked by significant labor market integration for women and a shifting cultural landscape that redefined the expectations placed upon a constitutional monarch.
Family and Personal Interests
Frederik married Princess Ingrid of Sweden on 24 May 1935 in Stockholm Cathedral. The couple maintained Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg as their primary residence, while using Gråsten Palace as a summer home. They had three daughters: Margrethe, Benedikte, and Anne-Marie. Beyond his royal obligations, Frederik was a skilled musician, known for his proficiency on the piano and his ability as a conductor.
