Frédérick Raynal began his programming career in 1979 by crafting the game Laser for the ZX81 while still in high school. This early interest in digital systems led to a long professional trajectory in game design and development, spanning several decades and multiple studios throughout France, characterized by his experimentation with early 3D engines and survival horror conventions.
Early Career and Technical Foundations
Born in 1966 in Brive-la-Gaillarde, Raynal gained early experience developing commercial software and Minitel emulators such as Minitelec, Servitelec, and Transmitelec. His first commercial release was Robix 500 in 1983. He gained recognition for his graphics work on the 1988 game PopCorn. Upon joining Infogrames, he executed a complete rewrite of the assembly language code for Alpha Waves to facilitate a 1990 port, a project widely acknowledged for establishing early 3D platform gameplay.

Following his work on Alpha Waves, Raynal directed the development of Alone in the Dark in 1992. The project was fundamental in establishing the conventions of the survival horror genre and contributed significantly to the success of Infogrames. During this period, he also provided input on the game's sequel, Alone in the Dark 2, before departing the organization.
Adeline Software and No Cliché
In 1993, Raynal co-founded Adeline Software International, releasing titles including Little Big Adventure in 1994 and Time Commando in 1996. After Sega acquired the studio, it was rebranded as No Cliché. Under this new structure, the team developed Toy Commander and Toy Racer for the Dreamcast platform. The studio faced operational shifts in 2001, resulting in the cancellation of the project Agartha.
Professional Recognition and Continued Development
Raynal received the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2006, and was later honored as an Officer of Arts and Letters in 2013. His recent contributions include the 2017 release of 2Dark, developed through his studio Gloomywood, and the 2023 development of Skew for the Playdate console. As of 2026, he is working on a reimagining of his early title PopCorn and a co-op version titled Popcorn DUEL.
