Frédéric Pham

French mathematician and physicist

Brieskorn-Pham manifolds serve as the primary evidence of his contributions to the study of exotic spheres in geometry. Born in 1938 in Ho Chi Minh City, the French mathematician and physicist has spent his career examining the intersection of differential topology, quantum mechanics, and the complex analysis of singularities within theoretical frameworks.

Academic Foundation and Early Research

Frédéric Pham attended the École polytechnique between 1957 and 1959. Following this period, he joined the CEA Paris-Saclay, where he remained from 1961 until 1969. During his time at Saclay, he developed his doctoral research while simultaneously participating in seminars led by René Thom at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. In 1969, he completed his Ph.D. under the supervision of Raymond Stora, presenting a thesis titled Singularités des processus de diffusion multiple.

Professional Tenure and Collaborations

In 1970, Pham accepted a professorship at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, where he eventually retired as professor emeritus in 2001. Throughout his career, he maintained active research ties outside of his home institution, including an academic year as a visiting professor in Hanoi from 1979 to 1980. He also frequently visited the Institut Fourier in Grenoble to conduct collaborative studies. In the 1970s, he partnered with Bernard Teissier to investigate the singularities of systems involving plane algebraic curves.

Mathematical Specializations

His research portfolio encompasses a broad range of subjects, including Sato's hyperfunctions, microlocal analysis, and the function theory of several complex variables. In the 1960s, he pioneered the application of Thom's differential topology methods to Landau singularities. His work further extends to semiclassical approximations in quantum mechanics and the analytical singularities found within Feynman integrals. His scholarly output includes numerous publications such as Singularités des systèmes différentiels de Gauss-Manin and the 1965 paper on Picard-Lefschetz formulas.
