Academic and Medical Career
Born in Bonn in 1765, Wegeler pursued medical studies at the Universities of Bonn and Vienna. By 1789, he secured a position as a tenured professor at the University of Bonn, specializing in legal medicine and obstetrics. His career trajectory was interrupted in 1794 by the French Revolutionary Wars, forcing a departure from his home city. After a two-year residence in Vienna, he returned to Bonn to continue his work as a general practitioner and academic instructor.

Wegeler married Eleonore von Breuning in 1802. She was the daughter of Helene von Breuning and had previously studied piano under Ludwig van Beethoven. The couple had four children, including Julius Stephan Wegeler, who later became a historian, and Helena Josepha Theresia. Wegeler maintained a lifelong social and intellectual connection to Beethoven, with whom he exchanged correspondence regarding the use of music within Freemasonry lodge ceremonies.
Public Service in Koblenz
In 1807, Wegeler moved his practice and his family to Koblenz. There, he integrated into the Prussian civil service and continued his medical duties. His service was recognized through several state awards, most notably the Order of the Red Eagle 3rd Class. He remained based in Koblenz for the duration of his career until his death in 1848 at the age of 83.
