Franz Bäke

German dentist and general (1898-1978)

Franz Bäke, a dentist by profession, spent much of his life as a career military officer, culminating in his command of the Panzer Division Feldherrnhalle 2 during the final stages of World War II. His life spanned from his birth in 1898 in Schwarzenfels to his death in 1978 in Bochum, bookended by two distinct professional paths.

Early Career and Education

Bäke volunteered for the German Army in May 1915, serving on the Western Front and receiving the Iron Cross 2nd Class in 1916. Following his discharge in 1919, he served in the Freikorps Epp from 1919 to 1921. During this period, he pursued academic studies, earning a Doctor of Sciences in Medicine and becoming a dentist. He later established a private dental practice in Hagen and was a member of Germania zu Würzburg.

Military Service in World War II

Mobilized in 1938, Bäke participated in the occupation of Czechoslovakia and the invasion of Poland with the 1st Light Division. He transitioned to the 6th Panzer Division, seeing action in France and during Operation Barbarossa. In 1943, he earned the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. By December 1943, he led the ad hoc Heavy Panzer Regiment Bäke, which fought in the Balabonovka and Cherkassy pockets. For these actions, he was awarded the Swords to the Knight's Cross in 1944. He later commanded Panzer Brigade Feldherrnhalle and, in 1945, assumed leadership of Panzer Division Feldherrnhalle 2.

Post-War Life and Popular Reception

Bäke surrendered to American forces on 8 May 1945 and was interned until 1947. Upon his release, he returned to his dentistry practice in Hagen. In later decades, his military career was explored in the historical fiction series Panzer Aces by Franz Kurowski. Scholars have critiqued the romanticization of his wartime service, noting that historians such as Sönke Neitzel and Steven Zaloga urge caution regarding claims of individual tank destruction statistics, citing the tactical advantages provided by the Tiger I tank.
