Early Career and Semiconductor Spin-off
Born in 1960, Van Houten pursued studies in economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam before joining Philips in 1986. Early assignments included roles within marketing and sales for Philips Data Systems. By 2002, he attained the role of co-head of the consumer electronics division. In 2004, he assumed leadership of Philips Semiconductors. During this period, he facilitated the divestment of the division, which led to the establishment of NXP Semiconductors in October 2006. He concluded his term as CEO of NXP at the end of 2008.

Following his nomination in July 2010 to succeed Gerard Kleisterlee, Van Houten focused Philips on health technology through active portfolio management. His strategy involved shedding legacy assets, including the 2012 sale of the television business and the 2014 disposal of audio and video units. In 2016, he oversaw the floatation of Philips Lighting. Concurrently, he directed investments into medical acquisitions such as Volcano, Spectranetics, RespirTech, Wellcentive, and VitalHealth to bolster capabilities in ultrasound, digital pathology, and healthcare informatics.
Departure and Global Advocacy
Van Houten served as a co-chair at the 2017 World Economic Forum in Davos and joined the Novartis Board of Directors that same year. He became an advocate for corporate sustainability, specifically the circular economy, serving as a leader for the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy. His tenure at Philips concluded on 16 August 2022 following a mass product recall of Philips Respironics CPAP devices, an event that significantly impacted the company's valuation.
