He provided compositions for artists including Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, John Legend, and Brandy. By 2009, he established connections with the hip-hop collective Odd Future and signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings through Tricky Stewart, eventually adopting his stage name from Frank Sinatra and the film Ocean's 11.
Breakthrough and Independent Success
In 2011, Ocean self-released his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, which received critical acclaim for its introspective songwriting. Despite later contractual friction, he collaborated with Jay-Z and Kanye West on the album Watch the Throne. His debut studio album, Channel Orange, followed in 2012, earning him Grammy Awards for Best Progressive R&B Album and Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2013.
