Early Life and Service
Born in Paterson in 1924 to Jewish immigrants, Lautenberg attended Nutley High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Between 1942 and 1946, he served overseas during World War II. Upon his return, he utilized the GI Bill to finance his education at Columbia University and Columbia Business School, graduating in 1949 with a degree in economics.

Lautenberg began his civilian career as a salesman for Prudential Insurance before joining Automatic Data Processing, a payroll-management firm, where he eventually rose to the roles of chairman and chief executive officer in 1975. Beyond his corporate work, he held significant positions in communal organizations, including serving as the youngest chair in the history of the United Jewish Appeal and acting as executive commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from 1978 to 1982.
Legislative Tenure
First elected to the Senate in 1982, Lautenberg secured his position by defeating Millicent Fenwick in a closely watched contest. He served multiple terms between 1982 and 2001, returning to office in 2003 following the withdrawal of Robert Torricelli. His legislative portfolio focused on public transit, environmental regulation, and gun control. Notably, he championed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. He remained an active legislator until his death in 2013 in New York City and was subsequently buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
