Early Career and Move to Paris
Born in 1932 to market gardeners of Italian descent, Lai began his musical journey playing in regional orchestras near his hometown. After relocating to Marseille, he encountered jazz and the singer Claude Goaty. He eventually followed Goaty to Paris, where he integrated into the Montmartre music circuit. During this period, he partnered with Bernard Dimey for songwriting and served as an accompanist for Édith Piaf.

In 1965, Lai initiated a long-standing creative partnership with filmmaker Claude Lelouch. Their first joint project, A Man and a Woman, released in 1966, achieved international success and secured multiple accolades. This relationship led to scores for several subsequent films including Vivre pour vivre, Un homme qui me plaît, Le voyou, and Happy New Year. Beyond these works, Lai also supported Mireille Mathieu in numerous recordings.
Global Success and Versatility
Beyond his work with Lelouch, Lai gained international recognition for his soundtrack to Rider on the Rain, which earned a gold disc in 1971. His Love Story score topped charts in the United States, with the theme song performed by Andy Williams becoming a prominent hit. His diverse portfolio included music for thrillers, dramas, and erotic films like Emmanuelle 2 and Bilitis. He also composed the theme for the BBC series Panorama, titled Aujourd'hui C'est Toi.
