Foundations and Early Career
Born in Hanover on 19 February 1950, Buchholz engaged with rock music by age 11. His early performance history included the school band Blue Carps at age 15, followed by diverse work in jazz, blues, and rock ensembles. While pursuing mechanical engineering studies at Leibniz University Hannover and jazz training at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, he joined the band Dawn Road. In 1973, that group merged with Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker to form a new lineup of the Scorpions.

Buchholz recorded 12 albums with the Scorpions between 1974 and 1990. His studio debut occurred on Fly to the Rainbow. During his 18-year tenure, the band achieved significant international reach, becoming the first metal group to tour the Soviet Union in 1988. He contributed to the songwriting of the track Kicks After Six on the 1990 album Crazy World. Following internal disagreements regarding management, he departed the band in 1992. His contributions remained part of the band's catalog, including the 1995 release Live Bites.
Later Projects and Entrepreneurship
Beyond his primary band, Buchholz engaged in varied musical and business endeavors. He formed the stage lighting and PA rental company Rocksound in 1978 to distribute custom loudspeaker cabinets and provide work for road crews. In 1996, he authored Bass Magic. His later performance career included a 2008 collaboration with Dreamtide, as well as an extensive run with Michael Schenker's Temple of Rock between 2012 and 2016, which resulted in studio albums like Bridge the Gap and Spirit on a Mission. He also recorded with Phantom 5.
