Architectural Education and Early Career
Houben received her education at Maartenscollege in Groningen before graduating with cum laude honors from the Delft University of Technology. She established her career as a founding partner and creative director of Mecanoo. Beyond her design work, she has served as a university teacher and held various professorships internationally, including a visiting professorship at Harvard University in 2007.

Following the completion of the Delft University of Technology Library in 1997, she designed the Library of Birmingham, which opened in 2013 and earned a shortlisting for the 2014 RIBA Stirling Prize. Her involvement in institutional projects extends to international renovations, such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C., and the New York Public Library.

Houben published her architectural manifesto, Composition, Contrast, Complexity, in 2001. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Amsterdamse Architectuurprijs and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds award, which she received in 2015 from Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.
