Visual Development and Photography
Sigismondi began her professional life as a fashion photographer. Her early creative focus included painting and illustration, which she studied starting in 1990 at what is now OCAD University. She later expanded into sculpture, producing installations exhibited in cities including London, New York City, and Toronto. Her photographic work was documented in two monographs published by Die Gestalten Verlag: Redemption in 1999 and Immune in 2005. She frequently incorporates tactile, hand-crafted props into her productions, emphasizing a design philosophy that balances brutal textures with ethereal aesthetics.

Her entry into music video direction followed an invitation from The Revolver Film Co. Over her career, she has directed visuals for diverse performers, including David Bowie, Rihanna, Marilyn Manson, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, Björk, and The White Stripes. Her directorial style often utilizes dark, entropic themes, which she has described as underworlds inhabited by tortured souls. She has received numerous industry honors, including the 2024 UK Music Video Awards Icon Award and the 2003 New York Underground Film Festival Audio/Visual Award.
Feature Film and Television Projects
Sigismondi moved into feature filmmaking with the 2010 release of The Runaways, a project she wrote and directed based on Cherie Currie’s memoir, Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway. The film focuses on the 1970s rock band and the relationship between Joan Jett and Currie, premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2020, she directed The Turning, a horror feature based on the Henry James novella The Turn of the Screw, starring Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard. Additionally, she has directed episodes for television series including The Handmaid’s Tale and American Gods.
