The agricultural machinery company Lamborghini Trattori began in 1948, transforming surplus military vehicle components into tractors to serve Italy’s post-war economic recovery. This venture established the industrial foundation for a career that eventually pivoted into the production of high-end sports cars, fundamentally changing the landscape of automotive design in Sant'Agata Bolognese through engineering precision and individual ambition.
Early Mechanical Foundation
Born in 1916 in the village of Renazzo within Cento, Lamborghini developed an early aptitude for technical mechanics. He formalised this training at the Fratelli Taddia technical institute near Bologna. During World War II, he served as a mechanic in the Italian Royal Air Force, supervising a vehicle maintenance unit on the island of Rhodes. His experience repairing military equipment provided the practical knowledge required to repurpose heavy-duty engines for civilian agricultural use.

Take the IQ test →Industrial Expansion
Following the war, he launched a garage in Pieve di Cento, where he converted Fiat Topolino vehicles into modified 750-cc sports cars for competition. Simultaneously, he applied his expertise to the agricultural sector, creating the Carioca tractor. By utilising Morris truck engines and a custom fuel atomiser, he allowed his machines to operate on inexpensive diesel. Following the success of his tractor company, he diversified his industrial interests by establishing Lamborghini Bruciatori in 1959 to manufacture oil burners and later air conditioning units, followed by Lamborghini Oleodinamica in 1969.
Automotive Development
Dissatisfied with the mechanical reliability and maintenance of high-end cars produced by manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamborghini founded Automobili Lamborghini in 1963. He sought to create a road car that balanced performance with superior interior build quality. His industrial portfolio also extended to nautical engineering; in 1968, he commissioned a custom Riva Aquarama, hull number 278, which remains unique for its dual-engine configuration and custom exhaust system designed to his specific performance requirements.
Later Years
By the late 1970s, Lamborghini divested from many of his corporate interests, including his manufacturing ventures. He retired to an estate in Umbria, shifting his focus to viticulture. He remained in Italy until his death in 1993 in Perugia, with his final resting place located in Renazzo.
