Early Development and Training
Born in 1977, Van Groeningen attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent. He graduated in 2000 with a Masters of Audiovisual Arts, presenting the short film 50CC as his thesis project. Before transitioning to feature films, he directed several short films and wrote and directed multiple stage plays. His early creative trajectory was bolstered by a long-term collaboration with his former professor, Dirk Impens, who produced his first five feature films under the Menuet company until its closure in 2017.

Van Groeningen gained significant attention with his 2009 film The Misfortunates, an adaptation of the novel by Dimitri Verhulst. The film, which follows a youth raised by a family of alcoholics, drew 454,435 admissions in Belgium and served as the Belgian entry for the 82nd Academy Awards. He achieved further acclaim with the 2012 drama The Broken Circle Breakdown, which secured a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the 86th Academy Awards. This success led to his invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2014.
International Expansion
The director explored themes of nightlife and music in his 2016 film Belgica, which was inspired by a music club called The Charlatan once owned by his father. The project won the Best Director prize in the World Cinema Dramatic section at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2018, he moved into English-language cinema with Beautiful Boy, featuring actors Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet. His 2022 drama The Eight Mountains received the Jury Prize at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
